Continuing education for dialysis professionals

Most dialysis nurses and technicians need to earn continuing education — often counted in contact hours — to keep a license or certification current. The exact number of hours, the renewal cycle, and which activities count vary by role and by the board or agency you answer to, so it’s worth confirming your own requirements before you plan your study.

  • Registered nurses (RNs) and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs)in California renew through the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Check the BRN’s current rules for the contact hours you need and which providers are accepted.
  • Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technicians (CCHTs) recertify through the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC). Confirm your contact-hour requirement and timeline with the NNCC.
  • Certified Hemodialysis Technicians (CHTs) recertify through the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT). Confirm your requirement directly with BONENT.

We list these governing bodies so you know where to look — always verify the current requirement with your own board, since the rules change and we can’t guarantee a figure is up to date. Our courses are approved through California BRN Provider CEP2359; each self-study monograph is worth 30 contact hours.
